Our Story

Adam and I met on New Years Day in 2010. My friend Nicole was dating his roommate. She had talked him up a lot before I met him and so I knew of him when he walked in the door that day. Only, he came in wearing sunglasses....and never took them off. I've never been one to handle such acts without making a smartass comment.

So when he sauntered up to me after being there for a while (and still wearing said shades indoors), the first thing I could think to say was, "The sun never sets on cool, does it?". BOOM! Haha! Take that cool guy! Little did I know, I was going up against another smartass, one who makes me look like an angel. And that smartass couldn't have been more excited to have met a girl who was so feisty.

One month later, after Adam had asked for my number twice (which I said no to) and had asked me out once (which I turned down), he had all but given up on me. And then there was a snowstorm. A big one. One where the snow plows could have cared less about plowing piles of snow onto my car, making it unmovable. After discovering my covered car was not going to get me to work that morning, I texted Nicole to help me solve my problem of a buried car. She always knows the answers to my problems. She promptly texted back that Adam or his roommate would definitely have a shovel. So I texted Adam sweetly to ask if he owned said shovel. By then I had given him my number, but I knew he was all but done with me. Had we been in person, I would have bashfully batted my eyes, tail between my legs, asking for help.

He amazingly texted back quickly saying yes he did and over a series of texts I had somehow conned him into picking me up from work that afternoon with said shovel to take care of my car. He picked me up and we went to the car, where he announced he actually had two shovels. I found out later that he had never even owned a shovel. He had driven to the suburbs that day to Sears to buy two shovels. One for me to keep in my trunk because, "every girl needs to have a shovel in their car in case of emergencies."

Adam promptly went to work on shoveling my car. I attempted to help, I swear. But he was just so good at it. Before long, Adam was the only one working desperately to get my car free. When it was finally uncovered, he tossed his shovel back in his car and said, "Alright, see you later." And then began to get in his car.

I stood there rapidly thinking of what to say. I mean, this guy who I'd been turning down for over a month just went out of his way to do all this. He can't be THAT bad. So I blurted out what came to my mind first. "Let me thank you for today. Can I take you out to dinner tonight!?!" He stopped and responded with, "No (pause, to make me wait). But I'll take you to dinner." And then he got in his car and drove away.

That night, Adam and I had our first date over grilled cheese, fries, and beers. A date which lasted five hours on a school night. Where the conversation and laughs never stopped. That night, February 10, 2010, I went on the best first date of my life with my future best friend, future husband, and now father of our child. I have a snowstorm and Adam's kindness to thank for not letting the best thing that has ever happened to me slip through my fingers.

As we enter into celebrating wedding anniversaries, Adam and I have struggled with letting go of this date. It was such a turning point for the two of us that I don't think we ever will. So as our journey continues and new anniversaries and life events become important to us, I wanted to take a moment to remember where our journey began, three years ago today.

I love you!
